St. Louis Rag, by Tom Turpin, 1903; arranged by Louis Tocaben; from the Mark Stern Mandolin and Guitar Folio.

Surely this is Tom Turpin’s best rag. Four varied melodic strains blend perfectly with truly inspired effect. Turpin (1873 – 1922) was known to have been a guitarist and some of the strains in his rags seem to hark back to the earlier plantation dances. Turpin’s tunes suffered when sold to other publishers, “Harlem Rag” probably faring the worst, having its first strain removed entirely. We restored some of Turpin’s notes which were inexplicably removed by the arranger, and also added a few things of our own. I remember playing “St. Louis Rag” with the Etcetera String Band on the sidewalk near the entrance to Busch Stadium during a Cardinals game to promote a ragtime festival.
