about

Silver Heels, by Neil Moret (Charles N. Daniels), 1905; arranged by H. Haug; from Whitney Warner Mandolin and Guitar Folio No. 4, 1906.

Leavenworth, Kansas born Charles N. Daniels (1878-1943) originated the genre of Indian Intermezzos in 1901 with his tune “Hiawatha.” This tune was so popular that when Whitney Warner published an arrangement for mandolins and guitar in a folio, they titled it simply the Hiawatha Mandolin and Guitar Collection. This follow up is a beautifully crafted composition with a nod to authentic Native American music in the second strain. Banjoists Vess Ossman and Fred Van Eps recorded popular records of it. I first heard the tune on a 78 I found in Daniels’ home town. At least 25 of Daniels’ tunes were published for mandolins and guitar.
