about

Persian Lamb Rag, by Percy Wenrich, 1908; arranged by Walter Jacobs; from the Cadenza magazine, August, 1908.

Percy Wenrich was one of a number of ragtime composers to come from the Missouri Ozarks. Several of this tunes entered the folkways including his Indian tunes “Rainbow”, “Silver Bell” and “Snow Deer”, and his songs “Put on Your Old Gray Bonnet”, “When You Wore a Tulip” and “In Berry Picking Time”. His “Dixie Darlings” was recorded by the original Carter Family while his “Dixie Blossoms” was recorded by Ozark fiddler Art Galbraith. Both “Persian Lamb Rag” and “Silver Bell” were recorded in two mandolin and guitar versions by the Gibson String Trio in 1928. A number of sources suggest a relationship between “Persian Lamb Rag” and a fiddle tune called “Whiskers”. This piece, better known as “Stone’s Rag” and first recorded by Paul Warmack his Gully Jumpers and attributed to Oscar Stone, fiddle player with Dr. Humphrey Bates Possum Hunters, bears NO resemblance to “Persian Lamb Rag”. There is however a definite similarity between the first strain of “Persian Lamb Rag” and the first strain of Charles L. Johnson’s “Crazy Bone Rag”. Other recordings are the banjo versions by Vess Ossman and Bob Roberts.
