about

Pearl of the Harem, by Harry P. Guy, 1901; arranged by E.H. Hovey; from S.S. Stewart’s Banjo and Guitar Journal, 1901.

A fine example of the “original Motown Sound”. Harry Guy (1870 – 1950) and fellow Detroit composer Fred Stone produced some of the finest, most polished ragtime of the earliest period, outside of Scott Joplin’s Missouri group. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, Guy learned piano, violin and organ, and studied piano in both Cincinnati and New York where he played a concert in Carnegie Hall as early as 1890. He returned to Detroit in 1895, becoming a member of Finney’s orchestra, "Detroit’s finest." “Pearl of the Harem” became a favorite of banjoists, being recorded by Vess Ossman, Fred Van Eps, and British banjo player Charlie Rogers.
