about

Nappy Lee, by Joe Jordan, 1903; arranger unknown; J.E. Agnew Music Publishing Company, 1903.

The first recorded rag of Cincinnati born Joe Jordan (1882 – 1971) who moved to St. Louis in the early 1900s where he encountered Scott Joplin and Tom Turpin and reportedly played at Turpin’s Rosebud Café. Later in Chicago he composed music for productions at the Pekin Theatre. His monster hit was “Lovie Joe” featured by Fanny Brice in the Ziegfeld Follies. In 1963 he participated in Ragtime Bob Darch’s Golden Reunion in Ragtime recording project with Eubie Blake and Charlie Thompson. This number is named for a trombone player Joe Jordan played with, and a slide trombone is suggested in the 2nd mandolin part of the trio here played by Nick. J.E. Agnew was the major publisher of mandolin and guitar music in Iowa.
