about

Dolores (formerly Cubanola), by Neil Moret (Charles N. Daniels), 1902; arranged by Louis Tocaben; from the Hiawatha Mandolin and Guitar Collection (Whitney Warner), 1903.

Published music using the Afro-Cuban habanera rhythm appeared in the U.S. in the 19th century and continued throughout the ragtime era. These represent the earliest appearance of New World syncopated music, outside of certain minstrel banjo and fiddle pieces. Mexican musicians playing habaneras (called danzas) at the Cotton Exposition in New Orleans in 1884-85 and elsewhere led to the misconception that this rhythm originated there. Hence a number of U.S. habaneras such as Joplin’s “Solace” are labeled as such. Charles N. Daniels’ original title for this piece “Cubanola” (changed when he sold it to another publisher who had already published a tune with this title) suggests he knew the true origin. The full spectrum of this music in the U.S. has yet to be explored. For another example, see “Cuban Belles” on Mandolins at the Cake Walk (Mandophone 0902).
